  • Good News: The Language of Small Rooms, my second chapbook, a love story set in Venice, has been accepted for publication by Finishing Line Press of Georgetown, Kentucky. The chapbook is a semi-finalist in their Open Chapbook Competition. Finishing Line publishes the top ten finalists. Judge is Ned Balbo.

  • Had announced acceptance months ago, but now the anthology came in the mail and it rocks. University at Salzburg, Austria, has just published one of my newer "Concord Slums" poem along with an oldie dedicated to Gillian Conoly regarding her Texas poetry offerings. (I used to write a lot of Texas Poetry.) As a ranter, it's almost impossible to get in academic journals, so this is unusually nice for me.

I wanted to let you know that your poem, "Hunter's Moon," will be released to our website, http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.americanlifeinpoetry.org/&h=75d31, next Monday, December 13.  Newspapers carrying the column will download it as a PDF and run it according to their usual print schedules.  Current readership is more than 4,000,000 per week.

We were recently notified that The New York Times education blog--the Learning Network--now features our weekly poem along with a piece from a Times writer that elaborates upon the poem's themes.

In addition, a large number of readers receive the column via free e-mail subscription.  We've heard from many of them in such places as Indonesia, Nepal, Tunisia, Uganda, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Germany, Italy, France, Canada and the U.K., as well as U.S. readers from Maine to Hawaii.

None of this would happen, of course, without the cooperation of the poets who so generously allow us to reprint their work.  Thank you once again!

Eve Brakenbury  and Paul McGlamery

New book of poetry

A Companion of Lesser Brilliance

A seduction so complete, readers will wonder if they themselves have fallen under her spell…

In A Companion of Lesser Brilliance, the moon embodies the feminine archetypes...oftentimes playing the goddess, sometimes the seductress, and occasionally the nurturing mother. She is, undeniably, a sensual symbol. Poets Eve Brackenbury and Paul McGlamery explore the spiritual and mystical complexities of the moon. Their poetry is not a statement of faith, nor is it an endorsement of religion.  It is an exploration of a darker, more intimate, and surprisingly feminine side to God. It is not just a collection of poems, but rather, the story of two lovers who are seduced by the moon. In this collection, the moon is not to be completely understood, nor should she be trusted.

Paul's poetry is contemporary and timeless. He is known for riding trancsendental waves.  He is a hopeless romantic who has become disenchanted with his war-torn, polluted world. He is constantly apologizing for the sins of men and forever looking for a savior from among the female populous. A liberal thinker and left winger, his poetry is refreshingly honest, oftentimes humorous, and full of sensual and intellectual dichotomies. Paul is not a willing participant in organized religion, but his spirituality runs deep. The feminine goddess has been a popular subject in his poetry and personal inclinations for years.  This is most evident in his love for women…especially his beautiful wife, whom he often refers to as his very own goddess.

Eve's poetry is smart, thought-provoking and endearing.  She is an optimist, who is enchanted by even the slightest evidence of wit and folly from among men. She’s a storyteller, above all else, and her poetry is often ‘fictional’ rather than biographical.  Unlike Paul, Eve is enamored with the world around her. She is a deeply spiritual woman; an independent thinker and fiercely faithful. A Christian with a questioning intellect, she refuses to conform to tradition. Her moon poetry reflects her spiritual love affair with the softer side of God. Much of her poetry shows a playful and creative style. Her imagery is erotic and honest, vulnerable and dangerous. Her biggest inspiration is the love affair she carries on shamelessly with her husband.

This spell-binding collection is the product of a writer’s friendship developed online in one of the internet’s premier writer’s communities. Authornation.com is an online community for Authors, Writers, Poets and their Readers. Paul, or pmac58, is the most prolific and most beloved writer and poet at AuthorNation. His poems, featuring the playful and sarcastic antics of the ghost of Bukowski, have become a special treat for his large fan base. Eve is better known as Calliope at AuthorNation and is considered the resident "muse." She offers bits of writing wisdom with her Muse Meditations series as well as sharing her poetic musings with her fans.

The book is on Amazon.com and at Prospero's Books in KC, MO. Prospero's Parkside Books in Blue Springs, MO and at the (Metropolitan Community Colleges) MCC-Blue River Book Store in Independence, MO.

There will be a book signing Oct. 27 and 28 at the Blue River Book Store where     mulled cider and refreshments will be served.

Hi, friends in poetry, I'm Ronna Leon.  I have been selected as Benicia, CA's next poet laureate for 2010-2012. The official announcement will be made at a City Council Meeting around July 20th.

P.S.  I don't want to send out anything to our group without including a poem so here is one from the American Poet STEPHEN CRANE 1871-1900

that I read recently and loved for its directness, brevity and humor.

A Man Said To The Universe

A man said to the universe:

"Sir, I exist!"

"However," replied the universe,

"The fact has not created in me

A sense of obligation."

Like all true poets, Connie Post sharpens language to pierce and rejuvenate the outer-skin of appearances. Again and again, her teasingly punctuated poems pull us aside. One poem asks an X-ray technician “how can she know the secrets of the body / the broken bits of history – not detectable / by her kind of light.” These feisty poems -- many of them soft-spoken psalms -- stitch and glue the everyday to the eternal, interweaving the worldly with the eternal. Concerns or attractions we first take to be particular or private dissolve into the universal so inevitably that we’re forced to relax and recognize the trickster-spirit of poetry at work. Trip Wires is a treat.

-- Al Young
California poet laureate emeritus

Start from the end and peel back meaning / word by word, line by line” Connie Post tells us, and in Trip Wire, she demonstrates how to start from the end and peel back meaning to the heart of things, the essential, even as she acknowledges the risks in facing the darkest parts of memory—that we might not “remember / how to wake.” But remember she does, more and more deeply, in poems as fiercely honest as they are tender, in a voice that is always compelling and afraid of nothing.

This past spring, Kore Press published a broadside of one of my (unpublished) poems, "What Comes," in a signed edition of 100. This was done as a benefit for Kore Press. At eight dollars, they are very reasonably priced, I think. If you want one, visit the website for Kore Press and go to their catalog. I'm not sure how many they have left, but I'm wishing them the best with this.

FANTASY IN NEW GUINEA

When one is about to die

three women of the mountains

strip your body with dignity;

they cover you, chin to knees,

with large butterflies.

Blinking satisfaction, you die

the splendid death of your dreams.

     The women carry your weightless

body to the top of a waterfall.

Butterflies blossoming in a tall tree

watch over you as you slide down

liquid air, land perfectly laid out

in a rain-forest clearing where you

enter the far kingdom as a butterfly.

Thank you Beau!!      Connie Post, Livermore, CA

I held the phone away from my ear while the news registered. Someone from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in Washington, D.C., was telling me I had just won their national short story contest for "The Invisible Door," a autobiographical story about my relationship with a high school history teacher/mentor.

A few days earlier I received my copy of Dog Blessings: Poems, Prose, and Prayers Celebrating Our Relationship with Dogs, an anthology edited by June Cotner and published by New World Library. My poem, "His Final Season," about my beloved golden retriever, Bentley, was included. Dog Blessings is available in bookstores and makes an excellent holiday gift for the dog lovers in your life.
